Known for its signature flat-twin engine configuration, the boxer motorcycle is designed with two horizontally opposed cylinders that give it the appearance of a boxer's fists being punched in and out by their respective horizontally opposed pistons. In 1923, BMW built the first boxer motorcycle in the world, the BMW R32, a machine with an engine layout that became synonymous with the legendary motorcycle manufacturer BMW. As a result, BMW Motorrad has become synonymous with the boxer engine since its launch in 1976.
